Investigators are collecting evidence from the cargo ship that plowed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge and caused its collapse this week.

Police don’t believe any cars driving on the bridge went into the water, but in Michigan, many cars get so stuck each year in standing water on flooded roadways.

So, what do you do if you’re stuck in a car that’s being submerged in water? We asked Michigan State Police First Lieutenant Mike Shaw.

You’re going to try to get that window open, get your seatbelt off,” Shaw said. “If you have kids in the car, get their seatbelts off. You’re going to want to get the oldest kid out the window first. That way, they can help you if there’s younger ones. That way, when you push them out the window, either you or the older child can grab that younger child and get them up to the surface of the water.”

Shaw says the most important thing is to stay calm.
