Benton Harbor will work with a consultant to study ways of reducing flooding along Riverview Drive.

In recent years, Riverview Drive near the Whirlpool campus has been plagued with flooding.

The Benton Harbor City Commission this week voted to enter into an agreement with Drummond Carpenter, an environmental and water resources engineering firm, to look for solutions. The study is being funded by a high-water grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

The commission’s resolution notes one of the city’s strongest redevelopment areas is along the St. Joseph Riverfront, which has significant problems with the watertable when the lake and river levels rise, presenting an obstacle to implementation of the city’s master plan.

The city will work with Drummond Carpenter to identify natural solutions to the issue.
