Late artist Richard Hunt has been saluted with an honorary resolution from the Berrien County Board of Commissioners, two days before a celebration of his life will be held in Benton Harbor.

At a meeting Thursday, Commissioner Mamie Yarbrough read the board’s resolution for Hunt. She said Hunt contributed several large sculptures now on display in public throughout Berrien County.

Hybrid Form II in Niles, 1974,” Yarbrough read. “And You, Seas installed at Silver Beach County Park, 2002. Silver Linings at Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph, 2008. Rising Crossing Tides at the entrance to Krasl Art Center, St. Joseph, 2018.”

Yarbrough said this Saturday’s event will celebrate a friend to the community.

And I’ll be proud to present this on this Saturday at a public opening at the Richard Hunt Center from 4:30 to 7. I hope you all, if you have a chance, drop in.”

The Chicago-based Hunt opened his Benton Harbor studio in 1995 and could frequently be found in the area. Yarbrough said Hunt viewed Benton Harbor as a land of opportunities.

The board of commissioners resolution calls Hunt “one of the nation’s greatest artists.” It also designates April 24 as Richard Howard Hunt Day.
