Eclipse not likely to have major effect on solar power farms

The solar eclipse is coming on Monday and we wondered how it will affect solar farms.

Consumers Energy has three solar plants, but spokesperson Brian Wheeler doesn’t think the eclipse will affect power reliability.

“It will mean that the sun won’t be shining as brightly for those solar panels that we operate, but the interesting thing is that even when we do talk about cloudy days, for example, there is some sunlight that still comes through and still does provide clean energy,” Wheeler said. “So, the technology has really grown. We are really proud of the fact that as we build towards solar, we can get away from operating coal plants, for example, and really build a carbon-neutral grid.”

Wheeler says less than 10% of energy comes from solar in Michigan now. However, by 2040, he expects 90% of sources will be clean energy.
