With the solar eclipse on Monday, Indiana Michigan Power is planning some adjustments to be prepared for problems and to protect its employees.

I&M spokesperson Kara Stevenson tells us there will be a lot of people travelling as a result of the eclipse, especially in Indiana. Therefore, I&M crews will avoid populated areas and work modified shifts from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. to cover the time of the event and when visitors depart viewing locations.

We’ve adjusted work shifts and locations for some of our crews in those areas of totality,” Stevenson said. “So, they might be working a little closer to the service centers and adjusting their hours a bit to work around that 3 o’clock time for the eclipse.”

Stevenson says the public is reminded to be careful.

We’re really encouraging people to not travel if you have that opportunity, but to make sure that you’re traveling safely. So, put away distractions, practice defensive driving if people are around you that aren’t aware of the area.”

I&M is partnering with emergency response agencies to be ready for any problems caused by the eclipse, like power poles being taken out by crashes. It will also be watching traffic patterns closely.

Stevenson reminds everyone to not only drive carefully, but also to use proper eclipse glasses if looking at the sun.
