Lake Michigan College theater instructor Richard King has been selected as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar, giving him a chance to study abroad to broaden his horizons and help improve the LMC theater program.

King tells us he’s headed to Spain.

I received a postdoctoral research grant, which means that for the following year, I’m going to be in Spain, based out of Barcelona, doing research into Catalan language musical going theater,” King said.

King says this dovetails with his dissertation work studying Austrian theater history.

King will not only study theater in Spain, but work on a production of Mar i Cel, which he describes as a Catalan Les Misérables. He says this year of enrichment will help him to further grow the LMC program.

“Being able to talk about how theater is functioning today in a culture different to ours, but that I think that has similarities in the way that we have subcultures within the national context, I think it’s going to enrich those conversations in a really active way.”

King says the chance to spend a year abroad while LMC gives him leave is “an astonishing gift,” adding when he read his acceptance letter from Fulbright, he nearly panicked out of surprise. His work will be in the Catalan language, which he says is between Spanish and French.

King leaves this summer.
