Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced $290 million dollars in new funding to update the state’s water infrastructure.

Speaking at a press conference in Eaton County this week, the governor expressed concerns over pipes, sewers, and treatment centers that are dangerously old.

“We’re here today because we believe that every parent should have the confidence to give their child a glass of drinking water from the sink when they sit down to the table,” Whitmer said. “In Michigan or anywhere in America, we know that safe drinking water must be a guarantee.”

The new financing will be used to support projects including repairing aging wastewater treatment facilities, replacing lead service lines and water mains, and upgrading sewers.

The investment is also expected to create over 4,000 jobs.
